Which Lens to buy? Canon 400 is lens L series or?

The 200 mm l series has a f/2.8 and I can put a 1.4 converter. Do this or get a 100 to 400 which has f/4.5 to 5/6 ? I shoot outdoors at wildlife.

Do lens mount adapters work completely fine?

Obviously besides being able to use any electronic signals to your camera like with canon EOS lenses, is there any downside to using a mount adapter for lenses?

What are the differences between a petal hood and some of the rubber collapsable hoods?  Is either better/worse and there is a noticeable difference?
