Question about Canon DSLR Best Lens? I have a Canon Rebel XT and I'm looking for a good walkaround lens that I can take with me to Africa. I'm moving there and would like to invest in a good lens. Any suggestions or links would be greatly appreciated. I'm looking for something less than $800. Of course a L series lens such as the 70-200 f/4 is a good possibility, but it would be a huge lens to carry around. I'm moving to Mali as a missionary. I would suggest two lenses for that price. Get the Canon EF 70-200 f/4 L for about $500, its an amazing lens and you wont be dissappointed. Also get the Tamron DI 28-75 f/2.8, this is a very sharp lens that almost rivals Canon L quality glass, but make sure you test the lens in store, as some copies are duds. About $350. With these lenses you have 28-200 mm covered. about 44-320 focal legnth on your digital camera. You can shoot a wide variety of stuff. Though I would also suggest getting one of the cheaper wide angles, for those nice landscapes. Since price seems to be a factor, look at something like the Tamron 17-35mm f/2.8-4, this is also about $300 and once in Africa you may regret not having it. Or you can avoid all the confusion and just pay a little more and get the new 24-105 f/4 L IS, but it costs like 1300 dollars. But you are limited in your focal legnths, but it is a very good walkaround lens. Personally I would go with the first three lenses. Oh and you are going to Africa and will not be able to buy these things later, so splurge now.
